Food waste is something that many people don’t see as problem. Whether they buy a meal from a local fast food restaurant or cook it themselves, people aren’t always concerned with how much food they are throwing away and its consequences. However, if you are someone who is starting to realize that food waste is a problem, there are things you can do to get control and avoid wasting food.
Here are three ways to prevent food waste.
Only buy what you need
Think about how many times you have gone to the store and bought way more you needed. Perhaps you were grocery shopping while you hungry or though the food you bought would actually get eaten. Either way, this increases the chance of wasting food. When you go shopping, only buy what you need. One way to ensure do is to make a list and stick to it.
Pay attention to portion size
When whipping up a meal for yourself or for your family, it would be helpful to pay attention to portion. This doesn’t mean put less food on your plate, this means cooking a meal according to how big you want the portions to be. If you cook with the goal of everyone having one serving or a small portion, you can avoid wasting food.
Save and eat leftovers
If you do happen to make too much food, don’t worry. This is something that happens all the time. Rather than throw the food away, you could save it for another day. The thing about left over is, you should only save them if you are actually going to eat them. If you know you probably won’t want to eat meatloaf, lasagna or whatever else you’ve made tomorrow, consider giving it to someone who will.
Sometimes, your eyes can be bigger than your stomach. You may think you are going to eat something, but realize you just can’t finish it and end up tossing it in the garbage. Food waste doesn’t have to happen, and if you start to consider the many reasons it is a problem, you’ll start to be as careful about when it comes to buying food as you are when choosing out a pair of shoes from Finish Line or a different retailer you love.
